Duxbury Select Board Endorses Rotaries at Route 3/Route 3A Interchange

DUXBURY — October 4, 2023 — Duxbury Select Board backs rotary design at Route 3/Route 3A interchange after five-year crash review. The board endorsed a proposal from engineering firm Vanasse Associates following an intersection control evaluation at exit 20, formerly exit 10, where 26 crashes — six resulting in injuries — were recorded over the past five years. The firm's cost-benefit analysis rated roundabouts roughly two-to-one more cost-effective than traffic signals despite higher implementation costs, and all-way stops were eliminated from consideration for low efficacy. MassDOT will now decide whether to proceed and would be responsible for construction costs if it does; Duxbury and Kingston will split design and engineering expenses under a cost-sharing arrangement approved at a 2019 town meeting. The Highway Committee had already endorsed the rotary approach before Monday's Select Board vote.
