Finance Panel Approves $20K Transfer, New Vice Chair

Finance Committee · Meeting of August 13, 2026

Duxbury Finance Committee approves $20,000 reserve transfer and reorganizes leadership amid bridge cost uncertainty. The committee voted 7-0 to shift money from its reserve fund to replace a failing uninterruptible power supply at the police department, then unanimously reelected Betsy Sullivan as chair and elected Mark Hokanson vice chair, succeeding Friend S. Weiler Sr.

Earlier, Tracy Novick of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees told a joint session with the School Committee that town meeting can only set the schools' "bottom line," calling cost-center spending decisions "really the purview of the school committee." Town staff reported MassDOT's Powder Point Bridge replacement carries an estimated price tag of $171 million to $172 million, with a federal historic-preservation ruling on a rival wood-bridge appeal expected around Columbus Day. Staff also said the town's electricity rate is locked at 12.6 cents per kilowatt-hour through 2028, versus a roughly 16.7-cent market average, and that a new state winter-storm aid program delivered about $280,000 to Duxbury after FEMA denied the town's reimbursement request.
